Our Interview With Cole Harris Knoxville

Question: What’s the most important thing we should know about you?

Cole Harris: No matter who you are, we’ll probably get along.

Question: Name the most impactful lesson you learned from failure.

Cole Harris: How you respond to mistakes you’ve made reveals more than the mistakes themselves.

Question: What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Cole Harris: Sticking with my now wife since high school! Only a handful have done it and remained successful.

Question: What did you waste the most time on when you were first starting your career?

Cole Harris: Trying too long to figure out the answer to every question on my own. It’s important to learn to ask questions often, especially when you know a coworker or even superior can help.

Question: Name a tool you use for work that you can’t live without.

Cole Harris: My iPhone, of course. I can’t imagine not having access to emails and phone calls 24/7, no matter where I find myself.

Question: What is your favorite hobby and why?

Cole Harris: Playing guitar. There is always a song to match every mood I find myself in, and music brings me a lot of happiness.

Question: What excites you the most about your industry right now?

Cole Harris: Technology and automation allow accountants to spend more of their time analyzing business financials and less time on data entry. Being detail-oriented and organized is no longer par for the course because now you must have an analytical mind to provide value.

Question: What concerns you most about your industry right now?

Cole Harris: On the flip side, with automation replacing many of the accounting duties, I believe those who do not provide an analytical aspect to their work will find themselves without a job eventually.

Question: What’s the greatest risk you’ve ever taken?

Cole Harris: I left a comfortable job at a tax firm to manage a new startup.

Question: Name one small habit that positively impacts your productivity.

Cole Harris: I typically finish one task before starting another. You can waste a lot of time switching between tasks and forcing your brain to refocus.

Question: What tips do you have for getting a seat at the table?

Cole Harris: Be confident and fake it until you make it. Learn how to absorb knowledge on the fly, and you’ll do just fine.

Question: What book has made the biggest impact on your life?

Cole Harris: The Bible. This book is the backbone for how I strive to live, although I fail many times per day.

Question: Do you value intelligence or common sense more? Why?

Cole Harris: Common sense. It isn’t easy to improve on common sense skills quickly. Conversely, the internet has devalued “on-hand” intelligence because the answer to questions is typically a quick search away.

Question: What would you consider to be the perfect day?

Cole Harris: Snowboarding in the Colorado Rockies after a nightfall of 12” of snow.
