The Janese’s share a love of travel, and Chris and his wife introduced their daughters to travel at an early age. “We have two daughters, and it’s always been important to me to take them on meaningful trips as often as we can and from as early of an age as we could,” says Chris.

Family Activities in Big Sur, California
Located on the southern coast of California, the Big Sur (Sur= a Spanish word for coast) is a large, beautiful coastal area that extends 90 miles between Monterey Bay and San Simeon, where the sun shines nearly 300 days a year. September is the best month to visit this area, although winter rates are the lowest and the weather, though rainy at times, is still not bad.
A Scenic Drive
As a family travels to the Big Sur, there are many scenes to capture with snapshots. The magnificent Redwoods are marvels to see. There are also towering, rugged sea cliffs along the way. When children become restless, stops can be made for photo moments against these cliffs. And, if the drive proves too long for the children, parents can make a stop at San Luis Obispo, Cambria or San Simeon, once the home of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst.
Andrew Molera State Park
To view the Big Sur region’s sights, families can take horseback rides along the beach with guided tours at Andrew Molera State Park, Big Sur’s largest park. As they enjoy the relaxing ride, riders can easily view sea otters and other wildlife. The park’s flat terrain is perfect for hiking and riding bicycles, and the calmer waters are safer for young surfers. Small children can hike on Creamery Meadow Beach Trail, where they can see sea birds at the beach. Another enjoyable site is the old Cooper Cabin. This place is occupied by hundreds of monarch butterflies from October until January.
Pfeiffer Beach
There are impressive rock formations to view at Pfeiffer Beach while parents relax on beach towels as the children play in the sand. As they do so, the youngsters can delight in watching pelicans swoop down and catch fish. Or, they can wade in a creek that runs into the ocean. Later in the day, the sunset that can be seen through Pfeiffer Keyhole Rock’s gap delights children with its uniqueness and resplendence.
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve has impressive marine wildlife such as orca whales, humpback whales, and grey whales that can be seen offshore. Harbour seals and sea lions often lounge under the sun on rocks. This reserve is also home to more clandestine animals such as grey foxes, deer, and coyotes. Before departing this area, families should examine the tide pools that often hold sea urchins, mussels, crabs, and various sea creatures.
Limekiln State Park
This 700-acre state park has many historical sites and natural scenery to delight families with children of all ages. A short hike takes visitors through stands of redwood trees and by old lime kilns. Another hike leads to an impressive 100-foot waterfall.
